(Graduate Student, University of Waterloo)

I have been a PhD student here since January 2004. My thesis topic is modeling of the basal ganglia, with the goal of accounting quantitatively for the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. I am also working on some extensions to the Neural Engineering Framework that seem to be important for basal ganglia modeling. This work deals with spike timing codes, and with the relationships between intrinsic neuron dynamics and the transfer functions of large neural ensembles.

My MSc was at the University of Toronto. My thesis there was an experimental study into a reflexive reaction that is important in the maintenance of standing balance. I also worked for several years as a software developer, mainly in messaging and systems integration related to hospital information systems. My undergraduate thesis (University of Waterloo) consisted of musculo-skeletal modeling of paralyzed lower limbs, to develop a control strategy for FES-assisted pedaling.
